Staying Safe Using Public Transportation
- Plan Your Trip.
- Public transportation can be confusing so take the time to plan your route.
- Have exact fare amount handy so you don’t have to open your purse or wallet.
- Know the bus/train schedule so you don’t have to spend extra time waiting at the station.
- At the train station/bus stop.
- Find a moderately crowded stop to utilize. Avoid empty stops
- Find a well lit stop
- Watch for pick pockets. Carry your wallet in your front pocket. If you carry a purse, handbag, satchel, laptop computer or bag of any kind make sure you have a firm grip and secure it close to your body
- After getting off the train or bus look around and be alert to anyone following you. If you suspect someone following you, go into a store or public space immediately and call the police.
- While on the train/bus
- Choose a train car that has passengers. Avoid isolating yourself in an empty car.
- Sit near the driver or operator if possible. Avoid sitting next to the door as a thief may try to grab valuable and exit quickly.
- Find an isle seat if you can to avoid being boxed in against the window.
- Stay alert and be aware of your surroundings. Avoid playing your MP3 player, texting, reading or dozing.
- Keep your items on your lap or by your feet. Avoid placing items in empty seats.
- Be confident at all times. People who appear confident and alert are less likely going to be victimized.
